'The Old School', as it is known today, opened its doors in 1855, the first headmaster being Edwin Howarth. (He was also the choirmaster).

The school was also known as the national school and was built to accomodate the growing village. Prior to this, education was undertaken at 'The Whitehall School' which was almost opposite the 'Black Lion' pub. It was later dismantled, and the masonry used to build the choir house. The school closed in the 1980's and education was moved to the new school

down the lane. Carol (Your chef) attended this school between 1969 & 1975.
